On what role his faith plays in coaching... "'Trust and Obey, Today' -- My desire is to honor and glorify God in all that I do and to be an instrument is His Hands. I want to be used of Him in His mission to redeem a lost world.
"As an assistant coach, I try to reach out to others for Christ on a one-to-one basis, making my home available for occasional Bible studies for team members and by being active with organizations on campus such as FCA, AIA and Young Life."
On facing struggles early in his coaching career... "The biggest challenge to my faith that I faced in coaching was when I was an assistant coach at the University of Maryland, and we went through a period where Len Bias died and a few years later we were faced with an NCAA investigation. Although I was never involved in or accused of any wrongdoing, I was moved out of coaching and into administration.
"When I was young, I was impacted by a sermon I heard on the 'Stones of the River Jordan,' as well as a poem entitled 'Footprints,' both of which basically taught me that during difficult times I should refer back to those occasions when the Lord had communicated to me. One of those was a time when He gave me the verse John 15:16. I continued to believe that He had called me to coach. Two years later I was the head coach at Radford University."
On the example he tries to set for his players... "I attempt to coach with enthusiasm and optimism and help our players to be infused with that spirit."
