Tina Langley  Maryland

Tina Langley

College: University of Maryland
Position: Women's Assistant Coach
Coaching experience: 10 years
Hometown: Jasper, Ala.
Alma Mater: West Alabama '96

Trivia: Langley served as an assistant at Toledo, Clemson and Georgia before joining the Terrapins prior to this season.

On her style of mentoring her players...
"My desire is not to 'preach' to others. I know that when I was in college, I just wanted someone to look up to, someone to guide me in the decisions I would make.

"A lot of young people think of Christians as those who are 'perfect.' They shy away from talking about their faith because they have made errors in judgment at times in their life. It is my hope that through conversations and actions our athletes see that though I am a sinner (I would rival Paul for the chief position), I have faith that God loves me and wants good for me, and that grace is more powerful than the sinner I am. Thus, I hope to be an example 'in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith...' (I Timothy 4:12)."

On standing firm in what she believes...
"There have been times in my life that my faith was challenged by my choices – for instance, whom I allowed as an influence in my life (friends). When I was young, I chose to be a follower. I wanted to fit in. During those times, however, I had this feeling that I was straying off my intended path. I felt lost, and no matter how large the crowd or how much I was liked, I felt alone.

"Proverbs 16:17 states, 'The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.' I learned, over time, that you must stand firm for what you believe, or you will lose sight of what's important, and along the way, you lose bits of your soul."

On what Scripture has influenced her as a coach...
"Romans 15:1-2 – 'We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification.'

"There are times in our lives where we feel as if we can walk on water. But then there are those days when we can’t see a sign of daylight, and we’re not sure how we’re going to make it through. Throughout the years, I have been blessed with some wonderful Christian friends who are always there to build me up when I am down. And when they are in need, I attempt to offer support as well.

"I think this is also what you will find great teams do. When someone is going through a tough time, and their teammates pick them up or have their back, the bond of the team grows stronger. If someone is sick and can’t give their best on the court, a teammate must pick up the load. If a player is going through something personal, a teammate will offer support and help them through. Ecclesiastes 4:12 states that 'if one prevails against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.' God explains to us that we are stronger when we provide support to one another, when we stand together ... and that lesson epitomizes the game of basketball."
