On the obstacles she overcame to play for Texas A&M... "The biggest challenge of my faith would have to be following my dreams. I dreamt of playing basketball at Texas A&M, but first I had to play two years of junior college basketball. I then transferred to Texas A&M as a regular student.
"I didn’t make the team as a walk-on, but I was given an opportunity to be on the practice team – I was the only female – that competed against the women’s basketball team. After a year on the practice team, I was asked to be a walk-on. I am now on full scholarship at Texas A&M.
"It took quite a bit of time for me to reach my dream, and there were a lot of doubts, fears and insecurities that often arose. But through my faith, I was able to withstand these insecurities and stay focused on my goal. I decided what was important to me and didn’t let the obstacles waver my dreams. It was difficult, but it made me a stronger person and brought me closer to my Lord, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity. I truly believe that I can do anything in life if I just set my mind to it and keep God close beside me. I know He used this experience in life to show me that."
On learning and growing in Christ through the Word... "The more I learn about Him, the more I want to learn. My faith is continually evolving, and that is how I plan to keep it. Getting to know Christ is truly the most amazing experience I've ever had, and it drives my desire to be a better person. Faith is an evolving process that happens differently for every person, and it is so personal and rewarding. It does take a conscious effort, but once you are able to see the improvements in your life, you won’t be able to understand how you could ever go without Him.
"One of my all-time favorites verses is Isaiah 40:31 (NIV), '… but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.' I like to constantly keep it in my mind. It helps me when things get physically or mentally tough or monotonous."
On the example she sets... "I try my hardest to live my life the way God would want me to – to be the same person on the court as I am off the court and lead by example.
"Basketball does not build character; it is simply an avenue that reveals character. I am so thankful to be involved with such an activity that allows young people to constantly check their character and pushes their faith to the max. I am secure in always being myself and sticking to the beliefs and morals that I have chosen for my life. My faith in Christ has given me the confidence in myself to be successful in life and in basketball. I want people to know first and foremost that I am a Christian, and it is the sole reason I am who I am today."
