On his involvement with FCA... "I first started going to FCA when I was a freshman (in high school) at Oklahoma Christian School. I was actually one of the class officers as a freshman, and that’s really when I first started going. Throughout high school and throughout college I've gone. I haven’t gone as much since I’ve been here just because my schedule hasn’t really allowed it sometimes, but I’ve been a Christian my whole life, been in the church my whole life. I was saved when I was 6, and I go to Life Church now."
On using his status as the best player in the country to glorify God... "First of all, it's just being a good role model, making sure that I give all the credit to God, and give Him credit for Him blessing me and putting me in the right situations around the right people. I've found that over the years I’ve really grown closer and relied on Him a lot just in prayer and in everything, helping me deal with everything that’s going on."
On if his faith in Christ helps him deal with the increasing amounts of dirty play used against him... "Definitely. Just having I guess wisdom or understanding of why people are doing that to me helps a lot, just knowing that it’s gonna happen and being prepared for it. That’s one of the things I ask God for, to help me stay calm and not overreact and play the game the way it’s supposed to be played."
On if it gets difficult at times to keep his cool what that happens... "Really, it’s not that difficult at all. A lot of people ask me that, but it’s really not. When it happens, I just don’t react. It’s something that I don’t know why people are doing it, I don’t know if they’re trying to give me a reason to pick up a foul or something like that."
On the influences of his parents growing up... "My parents had a huge impact on my life, early in my childhood and still now. They’re two very strong Christians, and they’re the reason for me growing up around it. My relationship with my brother has become a lot stronger since we’ve been to college, but there were times when we were younger where we didn’t get along very well. (laughing) Well, we always did, but anything we did as far as competition in sports always kinda turned into a fight, I guess, so to speak."
On what he learned from his dad as a coach (his father coached him all four years at Oklahoma Christian School)... "One of the biggest things I learned from my dad was just the importance of hard work. His work ethic. Both my parents are two of the hardest-working people I know. Among a lot of other things, that’s definitely something I’ve picked up from them."
