On how her faith affects her life... "My favorite verse is Revelation 21:4, which says, 'He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.'
"This verse talks about the glory of the day we'll meet Jesus face to face – the moment we as Christians live for. My faith is the most important thing to me and because basketball is something I put a lot of dedication into, I try to remember that God blessed me with the opportunity to play it and keep Him in the forefront of my mind."
On the challenges she's faced in her first year at college... "Going to college was the biggest test of faith I've faced so far in my life. When I left home, I left the support network I had relied on my entire life. It was easy to stay strong in my faith when my best friends were right beside me. But going out on my own, in a new city, meeting new people, I knew it wouldn't be as easy to remain on solid ground and not change who I am and what I stand for.
"I was lucky, though, because before I left I received some good advice. Someone told me to make a list of priorities and look at it every day. This advice is the reason I would call my transition to independence a success. Every day it was a reminder of why I'm here and Who I'm working for."
On her faith story... "I grew up in a Christian household, my parents are both outstanding people of character, and I am blessed to have them in my life. But even in a situation like that, there comes a time in your life where you're old enough to think critically and begin to think for yourself.
"Then later on, around my sophomore year in high school, I remember feeling like something was missing. Why was I here? What was I living for? Why did God feel so far away? It was then I realized that I had lived my life based on a series of rules. The division of right and wrong was firmly established in my mind, but I was lacking the most crucial point: a genuine, loving relationship with Christ. I think it was that moment when I grasped how much God really loves me, that I could spend so many years away from Him, and He'll take me back."
On the Scripture that has influenced her basketball life... "For basketball I really like Psalms 19:14 which says, 'May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.'
"I chose this quote from Psalms because it jumped out at me one day earlier this year when basketball was beginning to pick up. In a game as intense as basketball you spend so much of your time preparing yourself physically, whether it be in practice, the weight room, or just in the gym and mentally by focusing in practice, watching film, and studying plays. It's too easy to make the game the center of your life. It was a subtle reminder that although the game means so much to me, I cannot make it an idol before God."
