The Go Principle

The Lord said to Abram: Go out from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you."

– Genesis 12:1

In 2013, I was presented with a great opportunity to have a larger impact with my position with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. However, it required me to step out of the familiar and into the unfamiliar. Up to that point, I had been serving with FCA for almost 25 years and focusing on only growing ministry in the United States. FCA was asking me to lead the international ministry, which was out of my comfort zone. I was cozy in my comfort zone and didn’t want to do it. I was not qualified. I didn’t have the international background. I was bad at geography and languages. Others were better fitted for the assignment with more skill, knowledge and experience.

When we step out of our comfort zone, God shows up.

After an incredible six-month journey and saying no multiple times, God led me to live out the Go Principle: When we go, God will show!

I accepted the role to lead FCA International, even though I didn’t know what that meant. I learned first-hand that when we step out of the comfort zone, we step into the faith zone. Not just any faith, but full faith. Super faith. Big faith. Bet-the-farm faith. Powerful faith. Faith that requires us to put ourselves in situations where we pray, “God, if you don’t show up, I am bound to fail.”

God was stretching me. He wanted me to leave the familiar, the safe and the comfortable. I felt exactly like Abram did in Genesis 12 when God asked Abram to simply go! God just said to Abram, “When you go, I will show you.” And we find out in Genesis 12:4, “So Abram went.” He obeyed because he was living out the Go Principle. I did the same when I said yes to the international assignment. Even though it was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, it has been one of the most rewarding. God showed up when I was willing to go.

All of us have been blessed with skills and strengths to serve and lead. It’s sometimes hard to take that step of faith, because we rely too much on our own strength and play it safe. We need to step out and ask the Lord to stretch us in all areas of our life—physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally and even financially.

True faith starts at the edge of our comfort zone.

True faith begins when we step out of our comfort zone and simply go. God is waiting for us to be bold and courageous. We are made with big faith. Go faith. Supernatural faith. Once we experience this type of faith, we’ll never look back. It will be hard to imagine life without this kind of faith.

Five years ago, I had no idea that God will grow FCA International ministry into 84 countries with 262 leaders, reaching over 30,000 at 304 camps with 6,904 decisions for Christ! God didn’t show me what would happen if I went. He simply says go, and then He will show once we start the journey.

But we need to go. Remember, Genesis 12:4 says, “So Abram went.” What hangs in the balance if we don’t go? Are you going and allowing God to show you? Are you bound to fail unless God shows up? Let’s live out the Go Principle!

Lord God in Heaven, I ask for BIG Faith—the kind of faith that depends on You showing up. Help me to be someone who lives with great faith who steps out of the comfort zone. Teach me to go and trust You with showing. Today, I am asking You to stretch and strengthen my faith. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
