For a ship to stay its course amidst tossing waves and storms at sea, it must have a strong anchor that keeps the crew in the right direction to make it to their destination. As Christians, God’s Word is an anchor for our souls, aligning us with His truth keeping us on a sure foundation as we navigate uncharted waters.
In the sports world, we want to remain steady and certain. We have goals on team and personal bests, aims for tournament championships and conference titles; or perhaps we enter a season ten wins away from setting the school record. It’s the aim for achievement that drives us towards stability in our performance and outcome.
But sports don’t work like that.
Sometimes, it’s the sway of a season that keeps us off balance, going from a winning streak to a strain of losses that almost seem unfathomable as to how things can change so quickly. Or it’s an unruly teammate who likes the “me” in team and disrupts the unity aspect. Or it’s the collision that sends you to surgery and ends your season in the blink of an eye.
The more we keep the unchanging truth of God’s Word in our hearts, the more certain we hold to His promises and reminders of His presence, rescue and care.
What do we do when things get murky and the hold we had on an ideal season starts to come loose? How do we keep calm when the unexpected barrels through and threatens our sanity?
We can accomplish this by tying our hearts to the anchor of our souls: God and His Word.
“So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.” (Hebrews 6:18-19)
God’s Word is trustworthy. If you have a hesitancy to trust, tell Him about it. He is faithful, and every promise He has made has come to pass. We can trust that He sees our struggles and steps into the fray with us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.” (2 Corinthians 1:20)
But what about when things don’t go according to plan and you’re left trying desperately to piece things together?
Wait upon the LORD and look to Him as your unmoving rock.
“I wait quietly before God,
for my victory comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress where I will never be shaken.” (Psalm 62:1-2)
The more we keep the unchanging truth of God’s Word in our hearts, the more certain we hold to His promises and reminders of His presence, rescue and care. He is a set anchor that doesn’t move us, especially in the storms of disappointed seasons or relationships.
God will rescue you.
“For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom] and forgave our sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14)
God will fight for you.
“The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” (Exodus 14:14)
God will comfort you.
“Now let your unfailing love comfort me,
just as you promised me, your servant.” (Psalm 119:76)
Rest in these truths. God can be counted on to come through, no matter what you’re facing. He is faithful and a strong tower in Whom we can stand firm. The next time you’re tempted to flail about in the whirlwind of a chaotic week or upside-down season, remember that you’ve tied His Word to your heart, a sure anchor centering your soul.
