The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is continuing its international reach by building teams and developing initiatives around the world, including raising up a leader in the West African nation of Ghana.
Late last month, FCA announced at the Global Leaders’ Meetings at the National Support Center in Kansas City, Missouri, that Vincent Asamoah would take on the important role of Global Region Coordinator. He will oversee FCA’s strategic development in the West Africa and Central Africa Global regions.
“Since 2009, Vincent has developed a strong sports ministry in Ghana to serve coaches and athletes,” said Silas Mullis, FCA International Director of Field Support. “We’re excited about the leadership capacity Vincent brings to FCA in Africa!”
Many exciting plans are underway in Asamoah’s region, including new sports camps being organized for 2018 by ministry partners in Kenya and Sierra Leone, as well as the first African Coaches Ministry Summit in Accra, Ghana, for 50 leaders from 20 African countries in summer 2018.
Previously the FCA Ghana Director, Asamoah is from Ghana, West Africa, and of his 32 brothers and sisters, he is the only one to graduate from college. In 1991, he received his Bachelor in Theology in Ghana and started full-time pastoral ministry. He was hired in 2000 by the Ghana Baptist Convention as the National Youth Pastor, and in 2005, traveled to the U.S. and earned his Master of Divinity degree at George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University.
While in the U.S., Asamoah felt the Lord calling him into sports ministry. Upon graduation with his master’s degree, he returned to Ghana in 2009 and started Shoot 4 Life Ministries, an FCA International Sports Partner. Through this partnership and other initiatives, Asamoah has built basketball courts in communities reaching thousands of athletes through FCA Camps, clinics and tournaments. He is married to Doreen Diana and has three teenage children.
Today, Asamoah is active in expanding in Africa FCA Coaches Ministry by using 3Dimensional Coaching to help impact the hearts of coaches. Asamoah’s experience with the 3Dimensional Coaching began in the Fall of 2015, when FCA Ghana hosted its first 3Dimensional Coaching workshop in Africa for 50 coaches and educators from across the country. Together with Dan Britton, FCA Executive Director of International, Del Wright, FCA Southeast Central Vice President, and Dennis Hayford, FCA Regional International Coordinator, Asamoah worked to invest in the professional and personal conduct of each of the coaches and educators.
For Asamoah, it was an eye- and heart-opening experience, as this was the first time many attendees had formal training learning to coach with purpose to the heart of athletes. Four coaches even committed their lives to serve Christ.
“Can somebody confidently say that coaching him or her has made all the difference in his life?” asked Asamoah. “The difference of 3D Coaching is that you as a coach will impact somebody and they will say, ‘Were it not for this man, my faith in the Lord would have been a different story.’”
This Fall, Asamoah traveled with Silas Mullis to Freetown, Sierra Leone and Monrovia, Liberia, to share more about the 3Dimensional Coaching workshops with local sports ministry leaders, coaches and church leaders.
“These coaches in West Africa have embraced the 3D training as it has been received in the U.S. to impact their athletes and fellow coaches,” Asamoah shared. “Some are even thinking of bringing their colleagues to future trainings. The value of 3D is that it helps coaches not to just think about what they do, but they are challenged to think about ‘why’ they do it. When they define their ‘why,’ they are able to do the ‘what’ with passion. There is so much opportunity for 3D training to be done on the continent (of Africa) as a whole.”
