The COVID-19 pandemic can’t slow down the powerful influence of Jesus. More than 100 Western Oregon coaches and student leaders recently gathered outdoors near a church in Ridgefield, WA to worship, pray and be commissioned to lead FCA’s local ministry during Western Oregon FCA’s SALT (Student-Athlete Leadership Team) Advance.

Socially distanced and appropriately masked, these eighty SALT leaders from twenty-two school were encouraged to step into their calling to be the hands and feet of Jesus and be world changers - on and off the playing field. FCA staff Paris Shewey, Brian Metz and Makena Schroder challenged coaches and athletes to reach their potential as influential leaders, positive role models and difference-makers within their circle of influence. Local pastor Jeffrey Frye from Promise Church also brought a powerful message about how to encounter Jesus through intentional conversations, worship and prayer. One student leader declared, “Coming back from the pandemic, I’m going to go preacher mode and tell everybody about Jesus!”

Even though many local schools are not going back to school in-person, these student leaders and coaches will use their SALT training to make a meaningful impact on the lives of their families, friends and teammates – both virtually and in-person. The SALT program truly prepares and inspires the hearts of each participating student athlete and coach! One leader shared, “My favorite part about being a SALT leader is working with students who have the same heart as I do and getting to rally together over the same motivation and determination of athletics as we apply it to our walk with Jesus and do life together.”

During this time of uncertainty, the SALT Launch Day was a powerful springboard for local coaches and athletes to be refreshed and poured into. Each leader left the experience better engaged, equipped and empowered to return home and lead their schools, families and teams. This year may look different, but it will be incredible to watch the willingness of these 100 young leaders to allow Jesus to use them wherever they are. The world is changing, but the next generation is ready to lead with the hands and feet of Jesus.
