Protect Your Virtual Huddle on Zoom

As many of your Zoom meeting links may become public, as you try and spread the word to your local coaches and athletes, some malicious people are joining meetings, and posting inappropriate content via screen share. You can prevent this and make your meetings a bit safer by changing a few settings on your Zoom account before starting a meeting.

  1. Login to your Zoom account and visit the "Settings" page (https://zoom.us/account/setting or https://zoom.us/profile/setting). Depending on your account, one or the other link should work.

  2. Disable “Join before host” for your meetings. This keeps people out of the meeting until you’re ready.
    2

  3. Give yourself some moderation help by enabling “Co-host." This setting allows you to assign the same host controls to another person in the call. They can help moderate disruption.
    3

  4. Toggle “Screen sharing” to “Host Only” to ensure no one else can share their screen (unless you have made them a "Co-host").
    4

  5. Disable “File transfer” to prevent anyone from potentially sending malicious files through your meeting.
    5

  6. Disable “Allow removed participants to rejoin." You or a Co-host can remove someone from the meeting, this setting prevents them from rejoining if you have already booted them.

 Other Things to Consider
  • Add a password to your meeting. This makes the link longer and more difficult for bad actors to discover. Your attendees will probably not need to enter a password if they simply click the longer link you provide.
  • Provide the link privately, not publicly. Posting meeting links on social media can attract other people wanting to disrupt your meeting. Consider posting in private Facebook groups or other non-public means.
